Mobile Spray Tan Business vs. Studio: Which Is Right for You?

One of the first big decisions you'll make as a new spray tan technician is where you're going to work. Do you go mobile and bring the tan to your clients? Or do you set up a dedicated space and have clients come to you? I've done both, and honestly -- there is no wrong answer. But there is a right answer for you, depending on your lifestyle, goals, and where you are in your business. Let's break down the mobile spray tan business vs. studio decision so you can choose the path that actually fits your life.

The Mobile Spray Tan Business Model
Going mobile means you pack up your equipment and travel to your clients -- their home, their office, wherever they need you. It's a fantastic way to launch your business because your startup costs are low, you don't need a dedicated space, and clients love the convenience. For a lot of new techs, mobile is the perfect starting point.
The Advantages of Going Mobile
Mobile spray tanning gives you incredible flexibility. You set your schedule, choose your service area, and build your clientele on your own terms. There's also something really personal about going to a client's home -- it builds trust quickly and clients tend to be very loyal when you make their lives easier. For group events like bachelorette parties, dance teams, and wedding parties, mobile is especially powerful. You show up, set up, and take care of everyone in one appointment.
The Honest Challenges of Mobile
Here's what I'll tell you from experience -- mobile is a lot of work that doesn't always show up in your pricing. The drive across the metro, hauling all your equipment in and out of houses, the setup, the takedown, and then doing it all again at the next stop. It adds up fast, physically and time-wise. The biggest mistake mobile techs make is not charging what their time is actually worth. Your rate needs to reflect not just the spray tan itself, but every minute of your day that appointment is consuming.
How to Price Mobile Spray Tanning
Pricing for mobile spray tanning typically includes two components -- the service rate and a flat travel fee within your service radius. Any additional costs like parking or tolls are generally billed on top of that. Some technicians prefer to simplify things even further by charging one larger flat fee that covers the service and travel together, then adding an additional charge for appointments that fall outside their standard radius. For group events, many techs offer a slightly discounted per-person rate to make the booking attractive, while the travel fee offsets the difference and keeps the overall income for that appointment where it needs to be. The key is making sure your pricing accounts for every part of your day that booking is consuming -- drive time, setup, takedown, and travel back. Your time has value beyond the spray tan itself.
The Studio Spray Tan Business Model
A studio setup means clients come to you -- whether that's a dedicated room in your home, a rented suite, or a commercial space. Once your client base starts to grow, a studio can completely transform how your business feels and functions.
The Advantages of a Studio
When I transitioned to a studio, the difference was immediate. I could serve more clients in a day without the travel time eating into my schedule. No more loading and unloading equipment, no more driving all over the metro, no more setting up in someone's living room and hoping the lighting was decent. My space was dialed in exactly how I wanted it -- good lighting, great ventilation, a professional environment that my clients loved walking into. A studio also signals to clients that you're established and serious about your craft.
The Honest Challenges of a Studio
The tradeoff is overhead and commitment. If you're renting a suite or commercial space, that's a fixed monthly cost whether your books are full or not. A home studio eliminates most of that, but not everyone has the right space for it. You'll also need to put more effort into getting clients to come to you rather than the other way around --
Mobile Spray Tan Business vs. Studio: So Which One Should You Choose??
When weighing a mobile spray tan business vs. studio setup, here's how I think about it. Mobile is a brilliant starting point -- low overhead, flexible, and a great way to build your clientele and your confidence at the same time. But as your business grows, a studio often becomes the smarter long-term move. You can see more clients, protect your energy, and create an experience that keeps people coming back.
That said, the two models don't have to be mutually exclusive. After moving primarily to a studio, I kept mobile in my offering for one specific situation -- groups. Bachelorette parties, wedding parties, dance teams -- those bookings make mobile worth it because you're serving multiple clients in a single trip. The travel fee covers your time and the group rate keeps it attractive for the client. Everyone wins.
The most important thing is that whichever model you choose, your pricing reflects the real value of your time and skill. Undercharging is the fastest way to burn out in this industry, mobile or studio.
